The State of Freedom
A journey of Truth into the mind’s sanctuary
with the destination of inner Freedom.

Β2. The mind now has got a strong incentive to help me.

Until now the mind managed to consolidate the reconciliation with all his fixations. By this, he sweetened and considerably dampened the oppression exerted on his self by them. He accomplished this by various mental conceptions and methods, which altogether built robust and multilateral foundations, on which he can now mount the undertaking of his definitive liberation from the intractable fixed ideas.

This second circle of works starts under much better conditions compared to the first one. The mind has now a powerful motive to help me: having sympathized with me, he rushes to take care of me impulsively and unforcingly, because he loves me and is therefore moved by my struggle and wants greatly to see me free one day. Hence, without any muttering he puts himself out, in order to do his best for me to be well, gladly sacrificing his customs, so as to do whatever it takes, for me to come as close as possible to the irrevocable conquest of freedom.

Besides, the mind assigns to my self the highest value among all people and all worldly goods, since my self is the base for the mind to be up to enjoying all the rest. He adopts this seemingly egotistic attitude, because he has realized that, unless my self is internally well, the mind withers and cannot enjoy anything, regardless how many unexpected superb gifts life gives him. The nature then looks gray to him, the concern and love of his brothers for him seem to him insignificant and the achievements lose their brilliance. Hence, the mind concludes that he needs not feel guilty about this seemingly egotistic attitude which he adopts, since without this attitude he will not be able to be pleasant and beneficial either for himself or for his brothers.

The mind now loves me very much; hence, he equally wants me to be well. Therefore, he willingly enacts the role of the elder affectionate brother and totally undertakes his weak, naïve, dupe and unprotected from the Sirens little self, because he has now realized that, after all, apart from himself there is no other daddy or mammy among his brothers of this world who could ever assume this attitude, since he is the only one who by nature passes the whole of his time together with his self and is, hence, up to know what exactly is happening inside him every single moment, what he feels, what he thinks and what preoccupies him, provided, of course, that he sees to keep his Observer[1] in a state of unbroken vigilance.

Nonetheless, there are moments when he wonders which is the reason why, in spite of this realization, he continues to resist every now and again and refuse to eagerly perform the spiritual exercise that has been proposed to him by his wise brothers-teachers in various and vivid ways, although he knows very well that this would be for his own good. He wonders why he persists on finding diverse worldly excuses, such as that he allegedly does not have time or is tired or hungry and others. The answer is obvious and, as usual, dates back to the education which my mind has received since his childhood. Namely, when he was a child, he was trained to believe that he only needs to be a good boy, and his parents will take care of everything. Now that he has grown up, he has not yet managed to get totally rid of this childish perception, which keeps operating inside him on an unconscious level, thus largely determining his delaying behavior in regard to matters of self-care.

He observes the problem, smiles with understanding and clemency and proceeds to the realization of his new attitude, consciously ignoring the old – moreover, primeval[2] – internal halt, which is still existent but has now lost its previous power, because it has passed through the filter of the Observer and has come into the light, thus losing that underhand force which unconsciously determined the mind’s choices.

So, he adopts his little orphan[3] self and commits himself to him by deciding that he will be always doing whatever is necessary in order to help him become more and more self-reliant and happy.

This is a voluntary unconditional commitment, which is in force twenty-four hours per day. This is most important, and equally difficult; but the mind is now convinced that the power of compassion, love and emotion for the need of his little self will prove to be stronger than the absentmindedness which for a short time allows the power of any habit seem to him more important than the love commitment to his little self.

The mind’s attitude towards his little self is equivalently strong like the attitude of the most affectionate father towards his child. The devoted parent, who is committed to the raising of a liberated happy person, leaves nothing to chance, is continuously awakened, takes meticulous care to see that all messages received by his child are such as to advance him spiritually and not mislead him to wrong convictions, misery and self-shrinking. In the same way, the mind consciously and responsibly decides to provide his little self with only selected physical and spiritual nourishment, in the correct quantity and at the apt time, with no compromise ever. Unconditional commitment means that he sets no conditions at all, that is to say he overlooks all his preferences and totally ignores the feeling of slothfulness and its underlying fears, so as to offer his little self the best he can.

All these positive conditions did not apply by the beginning of the first circle of works, when the mind was still in a state of confusion and ignorance, as he did not know what compas-sion means and had never experienced mercifulness; all in all what he knew at that time were demand, utilitarianism, self-condemnation and desperation. Even so, the mind, amidst all these intrinsic controversies, undertook with patience and tenacity the required maneuvers to slide through his fixed ideas and olden convictions, thus managing to accomplish all steps of the first circle, which finally brought him to the reconciliation with himself.

His motive, and the very source of his power during that difficult beginning, was only the desperation and helplessness he underwent under the yoke of his fixations. He contemplates now that, since he managed then, under those adverse conditions, to proceed, he will no doubt do it again, now that things are easier and the way has been paved. Furthermore, it has been already proven that by the power of compassion and love the mind obtains all the will and patience required for the multilateral and labyrinthine task of the sanitation of his self, which he has now totally shouldered himself.

[1] The Observer of the mind is a benign and very insightful endearing gentleman who, whilst being inherent within the mind, usually prefers to stay a little above the head, so as to have a better view and not to feel dizzy due to the exhaust fumes from the anxieties which are to be found inside the brain. In this way, he manages to preserve his objectivity and insightfulness. This kind gentleman is devoted in the detached observation of body, emotion and mind, without judging either as positive or as negative whatever he observes and without boosting or suppressing it. Besides, he gives a continuous and instant report to the mind about everything at real time while it happens. He never conceals any information from him, no matter how unpleasant this information may be for the mind. This is, moreover, the reason why the mind previously often used to pretend not to hear him; but now he does not play deaf anymore, because he realized that this obscurantist tactic of his deserted his little self in the murk of ignorance and desolation.

[2] (primeval, because the problem of the overprotection tendency from the parents’ side and the prolonged dependence period of the offsprings on their genitors is a phenomenon which is inherited as an ingrained habit from one generation to the next and its beginning is lost in the mists of antiquity)

[3] Orphan, because, as we already said, regardless how correct and worthy his parents had been, they were by nature not able to know every bothering internal situation which took place inside him. As a result, the multiannual lethargy of the mind’s Observer, who due to his natural position was the only one who could play the role of the fully-realized parent, was equivalent to orphanhood for me, whereas his awakening constitutes adoption. This adoption generates in me the untold relief which the orphan child experiences when he crosses the threshold of his new adoptive parents’ home, feeling the true parental warmth and love which is unprecedented for him and which he has so harshly been deprived of.
