1. Identification of the product
Category WINWET: 1. Penetrating water insulating & durability enhancers
Product description: Micromolecular penetrating self-polymerizing water soluble acrylic impregnating resin for priming, waterproofing and enhancing of mechanical resistance of plasters and other surfaces. Copolymer emulsion water based.
Safety data: It contains no carcinogenic solvents, is water based. For more details, please read the Safety Data Sheet of the product.
Materials on which it is applied: Horizontal and vertical concrete or plaster surfaces (e.g. walls, foundation walls, manholes, tanks, concrete floors, etc.)
2. Data on the operation of the product
Which problems are solved by the product and in which ways: This product was originally designed to fill the gap that existed in the market concerning the primers that were used before painting. The primers using solvents are both unhealthy for the painters and do not provide perfect results as they do not adhere perfectly to the plaster nor have the requisite adhesiveness  to stay on them the paint.
On the other hand, some  attempts have been made with ecological water primers, which did not impair the health of the painters, but had even less adhesion and adhesiveness of the turpentine primers.
Taking into account these problems, the creators of WINWET products designed this innovative micromolecular resin, which achieves an unprecedented penetration into the pores of the plaster and has great adhesion. Thus was born in Greece the first worldwide waterproof water-based primer with so excellent properties.
It was, in fact, so effective that now it is used widely for securing the plaster itself, since by the deep adhesion that are achieved into the pores of concrete or any other surface to be plastered and thanks to its high adhesiveness it is capable of withstanding without any problem even the weight of the plaster, the marble mortar and other loads which often hung over the plastered walls (paintings etc.).
Then this micromolecular and especially penetrating resin was used also to seal the vertical surfaces, because on such surfaces Betostal   SLN and Betostal 2/14 because of gravity do not manage to penetrate sufficiently deep into the pores. And in this application, as also in waterproofing of basements and ground floors which suffered from rising damp, it had excellent results. So, now it is used as a primer and waterproofing resin.
Operating principle and way of action: Thanks to the penetrating potential of water in which it is dissolved and the skilled penetrators it is containing the resin enters at great depth into the pores and   the capillary cracks of the concrete. Then, as the water evaporates, the resin dries. After that, as it comes in contact with the air the polymerization (“lamination”) of the resin starts. On the completion of the polymerization the water permeable pores and the capillary cracks are permanently sealed and there is no longer any passage for water and moisture, whereas the smallest non water permeable pores remain open and allow perspiration in order to “breathe” the building. The invisible surface film that may be formed on the surface due to excess of material does not change the texture of the surface, does not make it slip, does not take part in waterproofing and so it is quite indifferent whether we it will be kept or damaged by friction, shock etc.
Benefits:
  1. It protects horizontal or vertical concrete surfaces (terraces, floors etc.) from moisture and mechanical damage.
  2. In conjunction with Smaltofix it gives a definitive solution to the problem of rising damp due groundwater in floors and walls in basements and ground floors.
  3. As a primer that is applied onto the plaster before painting it strengthens the resistance of the plaster, while “ties” perfectly with the paint resin and prevents its peeling.
  4. As a primer that is  applied on visible concrete before painting it prevents peeling of the paint. (For 100% protection of the paint is recommended one coating with hydrophobic resin Aquablock as a final layer.)
  5. As a primer that is applied on smooth concrete, it ensures good adhesion and stable fixation of the plaster.
  6. Protection of visible  plaster: It keeps the plaster for an unlimited period without damage and abrasion before arriving the time for painting  it. (Should it not be painted, extra protection is recommended with Aquablock or Contraqua 7/50, for absolute hydrophobicity except  of waterproofness, but also a drastic reduction of fuel consumption for heating the building. Both these materials can be applied after painting, if the plaster is to be painted later.)
  7. It achieves partial heat insulation against cold, since it is not spent the large amount of heat that is usually spent for the evaporation of moisture that enters the concrete when it has not been properly sealed. (For even better heat insulation through hydrophobicity please see the previous paragraph.)
Advantages over other methods:
  • It is micromolecular. Seals pores with a diameter of 0.05 microns. (very fine grain size)
  • It doesn’t age in time, because it is not rubber.
  • It is hydrophobic, not only waterproof.
  • It withstands high load of weight thanks to its strong adhesive ability. Unlike other water primers in the market, Betostal F/18 is not just adhesive, but penetrates and is polymerized within the pores of the plaster to comfortably hold the weight of the plaster.
  • It allows breathability so that the walls “breathe”.
  • It  does not need to be reapplied every few years.
  • It has a low cost.
  • It is applied simply  and quickly by unskilled person, without workteams.
  • It is transparent and colorless.
  • It is not damaged by the sun.
  • It does not cover the problem of moisture, thanks to its penetration its faces the problem in its root.
  • It has no relation with other ecological water Primers which initially were welcomed with enthusiasm in the market because they abolished carcinogenic solvents, but  then proved inadequate, leading the craftsmen and contractors  painters to return to solvent primers, which in many European countries have been abolished due to health reasons. Betostal F/18, because it is not only a primer but is also a micromolecular penetrating resin, has none of the problems occurred with the other water primers. It is much more efficient and reliable  than solvent primers because the water contained in the plastic paint needs water primer to “tie”, while with the solvent primers the bonding can never be as good. The technology progresses, this is something that should accept even the most squared technicians. Furthermore, no one primes anymore with the traditional method existed for 2000 years, i.e. primer prepared from eggs and goat’s milk! Even the most squared technicians and contractors accepted sometime to try also solvent primers and found out the difference. The same has started to happen today, as the craftsmen and contractors leave gradually solvent primers and prefer Betostal F/18.
Comparison with other materials of WINWET family: It is more micromolecular than Betostal SLN, resulting in a better penetration and adhesion, so it is preferred on vertical surfaces where the penetration is to be achieved instantaneously, before the gravitational force draws the material down. It has greater adhesion and for this reason it is an excellent primer for both the adhesion of the paint as well as the adhesion and retention of the plaster on smooth or painted surfaces.

3. Application of the product
Necessary equipment for the application: For the application of the resin you should have at your disposal what is indicated in the WINWET Application Equipment List.
Surface preparation prior to application: The surface must be dry and well swept, so that the pores are open. If there are cracks with opening larger than 1mm, they should be covered either with Armofix or with repair cement containing Betoplex.
Protection of other surfaces: Because when it is dried on marble, tiles, metals, etc. surfaces, it is hardly cleaned protect such surfaces with nylon or newspapers.
If it will drip, wipe the surface thoroughly immediately with a damp cloth or paper before starting polymerization of the resin.
Dilution: As waterproof: 1 part resin in 4-6 parts water
As primer: 1 part resin in 2 up to 7 parts water. The more absorbent the concrete is, the smaller is the dilution. Also, the greater the dilution is, the lower the waterproof (which in the case where is applied Contraqua 7/50 over the color is unnecessary), without however reducing the quality of the primer, i.e. the adhesiveness and adhesion.
Caution: It is important to observe the dilution instructions, so the solution is watery and it is achieved good penetration into the pores.
Number of coatings: There are required two coatings or more, until saturation occurs.   Then you will find that the material will not penetrate anymore and remains on the surface. Caution: Some areas of the surface may be more absorbent than others. In these areas you should continue to apply until and they are also saturated.
There is no need to dry out the first coating to apply the next.
Application method:
  1. Cast: we pour the resin diluted little by little and spread it with a wide hard broom.
  2. Spraying with a sprayer  (the most relaxing way):  is recommended the use of an electric sprayer with a barrel, as the manual backpack sprayer is very tiring for large areas. The sprayer must be thoroughly washed immediately after use, otherwise it is getting destroyed.
  3. With roller or lightening brush: We care that the roller or the brush have always plenty of material to fully cover the pores and the small cracks.
Required time for the application: The application of the resin is very simple and quick:

  1. With a roller or brush or cast with a broom: approximately        40 minutes for a surface of 100 m2
  2. With an electric sprayer: approximately 20 minutes for a surface of 100 m2
  3. With a backpack sprayer: approximately 60 minutes for a surface of 100 m2
  4. Cast with a broom: approximately 40 minutes for a surface of 100 m2

(The times relate to the total work, not just one coating.)

Weather conditions during the applications: On cloudy or sunny weather, cold or heat the end result will be exactly the same. The sun and the heat just accelerate the polymerization and waterproofing. If there is a forecast for rain by the National Meteorological Service, the application should be deferred. Especially, on the vertical surfaces the drizzle during the spraying does not harm, because the penetration is assured thanks to the spraying, and because the water of drizzle has a tendency to penetrate into the horizontal pores of vertical surfaces.
Lower polymerization temperature: 3οC. If the temperature falls below 3οC before the polymerization is complete, the water begins to freeze and the same happens to the special penetrators containing the resin, thus losing coherence and waterproofness. Therefore, you should avoid the application of the resin when it is very cold.
When the resin is polymerized completely, the frost does not cause any damage.
Drying time: Within a short time the resin is absorbed by the surface and within a few hours it dries up.
Completion time of polymerization: 4 days or less. During the hot and dry days of summer the polymerization lasts 24 hours.
If the surface becomes wet before the completion of resin polymerization: There is no problem. With another coating the damage is completely restored.
Paintability after the application: The surface can be painted immediately after drying of the resin.
Paintability with paints admixture: It makes no sense to mix the resin with paint before application, because it is not coating and thus cannot paint the surface on which it is applied.

4. Resistance of the applied product
Resistance to expansions and contractions, vibrations and earthquakes: Very good. The polymerized resin within the pores and the capillary cracks does not lose its shape nor is torn due to the movement and the internal frictions caused by such phenomena.
Resistance to shocks and frictions: Good.
Behavior in acid and alkaline environment: The polymerized resin is not attacked by the alkaline environment which create for example the aggregates nor by the acid environment caused by weather conditions, plant roots etc.
Resistance to temperature   changes: Thanks to its elasticity the polymerized resin withstands sudden temperature changes.
Resistance to extreme temperatures: Excellent, even at high heat and freezing cold conditions as those that occur only in certain areas of Northern Greece as far as Greece is concerned.
Resistance to solar ultraviolet radiation: Very good.
Resistance to constant contact with water or moist soil or other form of moisture: After its polymerization the resin is not dissolved in water, however   if left in continuous contact with water or humidity for several weeks it is likely to begin to emulsify. In practice, however, this possibility does not exist, because in all applications this resin is covered by another resin of products family Winwet, which is not emulsified.
Tolerance to   positive pressure: High.
Tolerance to negative pressure: High, because of the deep penetration into the pores, ensuring strong gripping, and therefore it is recommended, as Betostal SLN (often even in conjunction with this because of their mutual complementary properties) for waterproofing of foundations, basements, exterior surfaces of tanks and other surfaces on which water exerts a negative pressure.
Lifetime: Unlimited. The polymerized resin does not lose its properties over time, firstly because the material does not age (is not dried nor decomposed) and has high elasticity (does not lose its shape nor is torn with expansions and contractions) and secondly because in the pores it is completely protected from the sun, the weather conditions and mechanical damages.
Periodical preventive   reapply: Reapply is not considered necessary for purpose of prevention.
5. Natural properties of the product
Product form before its application: Milky thin liquid
Product form after its application and   polymerization: Single transparent, colorless, waterproof cohesive elastic mass diffused into all the pores and capillary cracks of the concrete or the   plaster
Elasticity: Good
Adhesiveness: Good
Adhesion – penetration: Very high
Coverage: Small and insignificant for the efficacy of the product
Air permeability and vapor permeability: Yes, the polymerized resin allows transpiration, because, as it is natural, the diluted in water resin penetrates only into the water permeable pores of the surface, which are completely sealed. Instead, the pores that are so small that water cannot penetrate into them remain uncovered. These pores are air and vapor permeable, rendering possible the input of fresh air in the building and the output of the water vapor produced in it.
It should also be noted that the air permeability and vapor permeability are stimulated by the fact that the polymerized resin itself has such a molecular structure that does not allow the passage of water but allows the passage of air and water vapor between its molecules. This ensures the following key benefits:

  1. The  building is well  ventilated and living  in it is healthy        and pleasant, because there is no smell (“musty”) or oxygen deficiency causing headaches, sleepiness, decreased        performance, etc.
  2. The tendency to form vapor condensation (droplets) and mold on the ceilings and walls is not deteriorated.
  3. Thanks to adequate ventilation is avoided the gradual carbonization  and weakening of the concrete that can occur when there is an increased concentration of CO2 in the building because of poor ventilation.
Filling capacity of cavities and cracks: All penetrating resins WINWET fill cracks and pores of maximum width 1mm. For larger widths please see above: “Surface preparation prior to application“.
Solubility in water: Before applied and polymerized, the resin is dissolved in water.
Waterproofness: Excellent
Hydrophocity and oleophobicity: Partial. In order to be achieved absolute hydrophobicity and oleophobicity of the surface additionally to the waterproofness, is required a coating with Contraqua 7/50.
Walkability (concerns only the application on horizontal   surfaces): The surface is walked safely from the first moment after the application. In the first few days the shoes may stick slightly over the surface, this however does not cause any damage to the water insulation.
Slipperiness: It causes no slipperiness, on the contrary it reduces the slipperiness of slippery surfaces.
Texture and appearance of the surface after the application: The surface remains slightly sticky until the polymerization is complete and for a few more days. Finally the texture becomes as it was before the application, a little darker and with a little more vivid colors, but without glimmering.
