1. Identification of the product
Category WINWET: 1. Penetrating water insulating & durability enhancers
Product description: Penetrating self-polymerizing acrylic water soluble resin impregnated for the waterproofing of concrete (e.g. terrace) and to enhance its mechanical strength. Copolymer emulsion water-based.
Safety data: It contains no carcinogenic solvents, is water based. For more details, please read the Safety Data Sheet of the product.
Materials on which it is applied: Horizontal outdoor concrete surfaces (e.g. terraces)
2. Data on the operation of the product
Which problems are solved by the product and in which ways: The problem of waterproofing on surfaces such as concrete terraces had not found for many years a definitive solution with all coating methods   that existed, so every few years the owners of the buildings had to enter in new costs for the demolition of the old coating materials and the application of new, from a different supplier each time hoping that they would have a more permanent effect, which unfortunately in practice turned out that this did not apply.
In 1989, the solution was provided by the penetrating acrylic resin   Betostal 2/14 and since then until 2006 insulated effectively from moisture countless rooftops and other surfaces of concrete or plaster. Betostal SLN is the improved version of Betostal 2/14, as it has higher elasticity and waterproof properties and therefore is preferred for use on surfaces exposed to rain and large temperature fluctuations and intense expansions and contractions, such as terraces*.
In conjunction with Contraqua 7/50 it constitutes the ultimate solution to the problem of waterproofing, at a cost that never exceeds 5 Euro per m2 and a maximum of one day’s wages, while all other methods (with tar, tar paper, bitumen, aluminum foil, asphalt emulsions, etc.) require multiple cost and several working days of specialized teams, without of course being able to guarantee lifetime durability of waterproofing.
For this reason WINWET technology is a revolution in the field of   waterproofing. Because it is apparently much more effective and orthodox to seal one forever with a penetrating and impregnating material the surface itself rather than to temporarily cover watertight with other materials, either in   sheet form or in the form of paste, which are subject to normal wear over the time (in many cases even according to our customer testimonials the coating materials don’t withstand neither for a year).
Operating principle and way of action: Thanks to the penetrating potential of water in which it is dissolved and the skilled penetrators it is containing the resin enters at great depth into the pores and the capillary cracks of the concrete. Then, as the water evaporates, the resin dries. After that, as it comes in contact with the air the polymerization (“lamination”) of the resin starts. On the completion of the polymerization the water permeable pores and the capillary cracks are permanently sealed and there is no longer any passage for water and moisture, whereas the smallest non water permeable pores remain open and allow perspiration in order to “breathe” the building. The invisible surface film that may be formed on the surface due to excess of material does not change the texture of the surface, does not make it slip, does not take part in waterproofing and so it is quite indifferent whether we it will be kept or damaged by friction, shock etc.
Note: When it comes to capillary cracks Betostal SLN fills and seals them perfectly and permanently, provided that there will not be exercised in future thereon such forces which will open them up. If there is such possibility or cracks are already even the slightest opened, over Betostal SLN (and before the application of Contraqua 7/50) is added Armofix. For very open cracks it is  ecommended for even better results to be preceded before Armofix a rubber mixture consisting of cement,   Polibond Elastico and a minimum quantity of water.
Benefits:
  1. It protects horizontal concrete surfaces (terraces, floors etc.) against moisture and mechanical damages.
  2. It achieves partial heat insulation against cold, since it is not spent the large amount of heat that is usually spent for the evaporation of moisture that enters the concrete when it has not been properly sealed.
Advantages over other methods: Compared with tar, bituminous membranes, and the coating emulsions it has the following advantages: The building “breathes”. You don’t need to repeat every few years. Low cost. Simple and fast application by untrained person, without workmen groups. Walkable and colorless result. It doesn’t get damaged by the sun. It does not peel. It does not expand from waters not covers the problem, thanks to the penetration it treats it in the root. For detailed presentation of the advantages, please click here.
Comparison with other materials of WINWET family: Compared with Betostal 2/14 (which is for 17 years an older product and has sealed perfectly many roofs, without need neither in one case reapply after one year) is even more waterproof, partly because it has a different chemical composition and because it is more micromolecular and therefore penetrates better and offers secure waterproof.
It is also more flexible and thus withstands better the sharp expansions and contractions commonly faced on terraces because of the large variations in temperature within 24 hours, as well as it withstands the   vibrations from microseismic, passage of heavy vehicles on the road and other causes.
Another advantage is that Betostal SLN is polymerized even when it is very cold and consequently it is worked even in winter, while with Betostal 2/14 we had to wait for the spring or some warm winter days for its implementation. In terms of appearance, Betostal 2/14 is more clear and bright. This property is important in its application on the floor, for aesthetic reasons.

3. Application of the product
Necessary equipment for the application: For the application of the resin you should have at your disposal what is indicated in the WINWET Application Equipment List.
Surface preparation prior to application: 1. Cleaning and drying of the surface: the surface must be dry and well swept, so that the pores are open. If on the surface has been developed mold and other plant organizations, they should be removed by using chlorine or another disinfectant ecological like Belcan-C.
2. Removal of old rotten coatings: If there have been previous   attempts of sealing the surface with other materials dried up and destroyed, they should be removed, at least in areas where they are   friable or inflated and can easily be rubbed off or peeled. The remaining areas should be filled with cement mortar containing either Betoplex either with Armofix or with Smaltofix.
3. Repair of holes, cracks, cavities: If there are holes, cavities, fractures or cracks with   opening larger than 1mm, they should be   covered either with Armofix or with repairing cement containing Betoplex. (On horizontal surfaces such as terraces, this work is usually not necessary unless extreme cases of fails, as the resin because of gravity will flow anyway in the various cavities. However, especially the repair of cracks should in any case be done for greater security.)
Protection of other surfaces: Because when it is dried on marble, tiles, metals, etc. surfaces, it is hardly cleaned protect such surfaces with nylon or newspapers.
If it will drip, wipe the surface thoroughly immediately with a damp cloth or paper before starting polymerization of the resin, because then it is   removed very difficult.
Dilution: 1 part resin in 4 parts water. Caution: It is important to observe the dilution instructions, so the solution is watery and it is achieved good penetration into the pores.
Number of coatings: There are required two coatings or more, until saturation occurs. Then you will find that the material will not penetrate anymore and remains on the surface. Caution: Some areas of the surface may be more absorbent than others. In these areas you should continue to apply until and they are also saturated.
There is no need to dry out the first coating to apply the next.
Application method:
  1. Cast: we pour the resin diluted little by little and spread it with a wide hard broom.
  2. Spraying with a sprayer (the most relaxing way): is recommended the use of an electric sprayer with a barrel, as the manual backpack sprayer is very tiring for large areas. The sprayer must be thoroughly washed immediately after use, otherwise it is getting destroyed.
Required time for the application: The application of resin is very simple and quick:

  1. Cast, with a boomer: approximately 40 minutes for a surface of 100 m2
  2. With electric sprayer: approximately 20 minutes for a surface of 100 m2
  3. With backpack sprayer: approximately 60 minutes for a surface of 100 m2

(The times relate to the total work, not just one coating. It is required, however, an interval between the coatings in order to dry thoroughly the prior coating.)

Weather conditions during the applications: On cloudy or sunny weather, cold or heat the end result will be exactly the same. The sun and the heat just accelerate the polymerization and waterproofing. If there is a forecast for rain by the National Meteorological Service, the application should be deferred.
Lower polymerization temperature: 6οC. (When the temperature falls below this temperature the polymerization is temporarily suspended and restarted when the temperature rises again. However, if the temperature falls below 3οC before the polymerization is complete, the water begins to freeze and the same happens to the special penetrators containing the resin, thus losing coherence and waterproofness. Therefore, you should avoid the application of the resin when it is very cold.
When the resin is polymerized completely, the frost does not cause any damage.)
Drying time: Within a short time the resin is absorbed by the surface and within a few hours it dries up.
Completion time of polymerization: 4 days or less. During the hot and dry days of summer the polymerization lasts 24 hours.
If the surface becomes wet before the completion of resin polymerization: There is no problem. With another coating the damage is completely   restored.
Paintability after the application: The surface can be painted immediately after drying of the resin.
Paintability with paints admixture: It makes no sense to mix the resin with paint before application, because it is not coating and thus cannot paint the surface on which it is applied.

4.   Resistance of the applied product
Resistance to expansions and contractions, vibrations and   earthquakes: Very good. The   polymerized resin within the pores and the capillary cracks does not lose its shape   nor is torn due   to the movement and the internal frictions caused by such phenomena.
Resistance to shocks and frictions: Good
Behavior in acid and alkaline environment: The polymerized resin is not attacked by the alkaline environment which create for example the aggregates nor by the acid environment caused by weather conditions, plant roots etc.
Resistance to temperature changes: Thanks to its elasticity the polymerized resin withstands sudden temperature changes.
Resistance to extreme temperatures: Excellent, even at high heat and freezing cold conditions as those that   occur only in certain areas of Northern Greece as far as Greece is concerned.
Resistance to solar ultraviolet radiation: Very good.
Resistance to constant contact with water or moist soil or other form of moisture: Very good: After its polymerization the resin does not dissolve in water and is not emulsified, even if it remains in continuous contact with water or humidity for several months. However, for added safety, in most applications is recommended Betostal SLN   to be covered by Contraqua 7/50, which has even greater (practically unlimited) resistance in continuous contact with water. This, after all, should be made for other reasons, which are analyzed in the text for Contraqua 7/50.
Tolerance to positive pressure: High.
Tolerance to negative pressure: High, because of the deep penetration into the pores, ensuring strong gripping, and therefore it is recommended, as Betostal F/18 (often even in conjunction with this because of their mutual complementary properties) for waterproofing of foundations, basements, exterior surfaces   of tanks and other surfaces   on which water exerts   a negative pressure. For even better resistance to negative pressures, please see the pages for Smaltofix and Penetron.
Lifetime: Unlimited. The polymerized resin does not lose its properties over time, firstly because the material does not age (is not dried nor decomposed) and has high elasticity (does not lose its   shape nor is torn with expansions and contractions) and secondly because in the pores it is completely protected from the sun, the weather conditions and mechanical damages.
Periodical preventive reapply: Reapply is not considered necessary for purpose of prevention.
5.   Natural properties of the product
Product form before its application: Milky thin liquid
Product form after its application and polymerization: Single transparent, colorless, waterproof cohesive elastic mass diffused into all the pores and capillary cracks of the concrete
Elasticity: Good
Adhesiveness: Good
Adhesion   – penetration: High
Coverage: Small and insignificant for the efficacy of the product
Air permeability and vapor permeability: Yes, the polymerized resin allows transpiration, because, as it is natural, the diluted in water resin penetrates only into the water permeable pores of the surface, which are completely sealed. Instead, the pores that are so small that water cannot penetrate into them remain uncovered. These pores are air and vapor permeable, rendering possible the input of fresh air in the building and the output of the water vapor produced in it.
It should also be noted that the air permeability and vapor permeability are stimulated by the fact that the polymerized resin itself has such a molecular structure   that does not allow the passage of water but allows the passage of air and water vapor between its molecules. This ensures the following key benefits:
1. The building is well ventilated   and living in it is healthy and pleasant, because there is no smell (“musty”) or oxygen deficiency causing headaches, sleepiness, decreased performance, etc.
2. The tendency to form vapor condensation (droplets) and mold on the ceilings and walls is not deteriorated.
3. Thanks to adequate ventilation is avoided the gradual carbonization and weakening of the concrete that can occur when there is an increased concentration of CO2 in the building because of poor ventilation.
Filling capacity of cavities and cracks: All penetrating resins WINWET fill cracks and pores of maximum width 1mm. For larger widths please see above: “Surface preparation prior to application”.
Solubility in water: Before applied and polymerized, the resin is dissolved in water.
Waterproofness: Excellent
Hydrophocity and oleophobicity: No. In order to be achieved hydrophobicity and oleophobicity of the surface additionally to the waterproofness, is required a coating with Contraqua 7/50. In terraces this is recommended to avoid the frost, which causes gradual erosion of the surface made of concrete, mosaic or other material.
Walkability: The surface is walked safely from the first moment after the application. In the first few days the shoes may stick slightly over the surface, this   however does not cause any damage to the water insulation.
Slipperiness: It causes no slipperiness, on the contrary it reduces the slipperiness of slippery surfaces.
Texture and appearance of the   surface after the application: The surface remains slightly sticky until the polymerization is complete and for a few more days. Finally the texture becomes as it was before the application, a little darker and with a little more vivid colors, but shiny.
