Product description:

Admixture self-polymerizing homo-polymeric water soluble acrylic resin that withstands the constant contact with water and is designed to achieve hydraulic cement for use either as a cast self-leveling cement mortar or as repair cement with high waterproofness and flexibility without cracking.

2. Data on the operation of the product
Which problems are solved by the product and in   which ways:

The problem of construction of hydraulic concrete in the form of fluid cast self-leveling cement mortar or repairing cement blocks with high waterproofness, elasticity and mechanical resistances, which will not crack as it dries remained until the summer of 2004 unsolved. Then it was released in the market, after a long investigation, the totally innovative product Betoplex, to substitute other resins which have had very reduced resistance to alkalinity and the expansions and contractions of the concrete, and a small to minimal weather resistance.
The design of Betoplex was considered necessary to solve the problems of water permeability of concrete tanks, swimming pools, foundations of water dams, concrete pipes, etc., as well as for repairing cracks, filling joints, repair of cutout concrete parts in columns, floors, roofs etc.
Since then the WINWET technology has advanced further: with the products Smaltofix, Betocryl and Betostal F/18 achieved excellent waterproofing without cement mortar in the above applications, and for the filling of joints is now Armofix which has much greater elasticity. Nonetheless, Betoplex is still necessary and irreplaceable in several other applications, which are listed below.

Operating principle and way of action:

The resin, as polymerized (“laminated”) due to contact with air, is creating a waterproof elastic mass which attaches great consistency and adhesiveness in mud and reduces the creation of pores during its drying. The result is a waterproof construction with high mechanical resistance, cohesion, elasticity and high waterproofness.

Benefits:

1. As a self-leveling cement mortar admixture (with water) for horizontal surfaces it offers to mud waterproofness, adhesiveness, elasticity, cohesion and resistance to expansions and contractions and vibrations and microseismic or other causes and prevents cracking of the cement mortar drying and after that detachment.
2. As an additive in repairing concrete (without any water) it ensures perfect adhesion on the broken part or the crack of the concrete or the plaster or other material we repair, waterproofness and high elasticity and resistance to expansions and contractions. It also prevents cracking of the repairing cement during its drying and after that detachment.
3. As an admixture for adhesive or mud of tiles, marbles, etc. provides the glue or mud elasticity, waterproofness, resistance to expansions and contractions, high adhesiveness, in order for the tiles not to be detached.
4. As an admixture for tile joints together with quartz sand powder and cement ensure complete sealing of joints and simultaneous elasticity to absorb the expansions and contractions without being exercised pressures that detach the tiles.
5. By spraying it ensures smooth drying of the fresh plaque without cracking.
6. As a cement sealing admixture in conjunction with Betocryl it seals foundations, tanks, cesspools, pools, planters etc.
7. In conjunction with Betostal SLN it is an ideal admixture for construction of waterproof, elastic and resistant walls and bottom of pool, tank, planter, cesspools, wells, ground retaining walls etc.

Advantages over other methods:

Compared with other additives in the market it has the following advantages:

  • As it dries, it doesn’t crack.
  • It is not affected over the years by the alkaline environment of the concrete.
  • It is not subjected to aging, neither disintegrated.
  • It does not leave open pores, it waterproofs the construction.
Comparison with other materials of Winwet family:

Betoplex is of higher elasticity than the admixture Betostal SLN, which is used in other applications where resistance to mechanical stresses due to load and shocks is desired rather than high elasticity (e.g. mud to masonry construction).
In cases of manufacture of plastering mud it is preferred Sovaplex DS, which has a higher adhesiveness, is however unsuitable for   the construction of cast cement mortar, because it makes the mud viscous.
For sealing applications of foundations, water tanks, swimming pools, planters, etc. the solution of the cement mortar with admixture Betoplex is totally safe, but now there are faster and more economical but equally secure solutions without cement mortar (see introductory remarks), which are based on other products of WINWET family.
For filling joints of all kinds and cracks with width of over 1 mm it is preferred now Armofix, which has higher elasticity and fills the cavities more easily than the repair cement admixture Betoplex, which on the other hand is preferred in cases of repairs, when missing large pieces of vertical surfaces, wherein Armofix cannot be fixed.
For filling cracks with a width smaller than 1 mm is sufficient one coating with the thin penetrating Betostal SLN, which is able to adequately fill and seal also thin cracks, provided of course that there will not be exercised in future thereon such forces that will widen them. If there is such a possibility, over Betostal SLN should be added Armofix.
A few years after Betoplex was released Polibond Elastico, a quite expensive material with superior properties than Betoplex, particularly as regards resistance. For this reason, it is preferred, despite its high price, in difficult applications such as, for example, the filling and sealing of openings that resulted from subsidence. Unlike Betoplex, the consumption of material is much higher: diluted with little or no water and mixed with plain cement without sand, to prepare a very elastic and completely waterproof mass that reminds plasticine.
However because Polibond Elastico is considerably more expensive than Betoplex, we recommend for the use in self-leveling cement mortars or other admixtures, cement-based, to be used Acryplex, which is also much more elastic than Betoplex, and is also more concentrated, thus requiring smaller amount for the same effect. As far as its cost concerns it is located between Betoplex and Polibond Elastico.

3. Application of   the product
Necessary equipment for the application:

For the application of the resin you should have at your disposal what is indicated in the Winwet Application Equipment List.

Protection of adjacent surfaces:

Because when it is dried on marble, tiles, metals, etc. surfaces, it is hardly cleaned protect such surfaces with nylon or newspapers.
If it will drip, wipe the surface thoroughly immediately with a damp cloth or paper before starting polymerization of the resin.

Dilution:

None. Pour the product in barrels, once you shed the cement, water and the other materials.

Weather conditions during the application:

On cloudy or sunny weather, cold or heat the end result will be exactly the same. The sun and the heat just accelerate the polymerization and waterproofing. If there is a forecast for rain by the National Meteorological Service, the application should be deferred.

Lower polymerization temperature:

3οC. If the temperature falls below 3οC before the polymerization is complete, the water begins to freeze and the same happens to the special penetrators containing the resin, thus losing its coherence and waterproofness. Therefore, you should avoid the application of the resin when it is very cold.
When the resin is polymerized completely, the frost does not cause any damage.

Drying time:

Although cement needs several days to dry thoroughly, the resin which is an admixture in it is fully waterproofed when polymerized, so it dries up.

Completion time of polymerization:

4 days or less. During the hot and dry days of summer the polymerization lasts 24 hours.

Paintability after the application:

The surface can be painted immediately after drying of the resin.

Paintability with paints admixture:

4. Resistance of the applied product
Resistance to expansions and contractions, vibrations and earthquakes:

Very good. The polymerized resin within the mass does not lose its shape nor is torn due to the movement and the internal frictions caused by such phenomena.

Resistance to shocks and frictions: Very good.
Behavior in acid and alkaline environment:

The polymerized resin is not attacked by the alkaline environment which create for example the aggregates nor by the acid environment caused by the weather conditions, the plant roots etc.

Resistance to temperature   changes:

Thanks to its elasticity the polymerized resin withstands sudden temperature changes.

Resistance to extreme temperatures:

Excellent, even at high heat and freezing cold conditions as those that occur only in certain areas of Northern Greece as far as Greece is concerned.

Resistance to solar ultraviolet radiation: Very good.
Resistance to constant contact with water or moist soil or other form of moisture: After its polymerization the resin is not dissolved in water, however if left in continuous contact with water or humidity for several weeks it is likely to begin to emulsify. In practice, however, this possibility does not exist, because in all applications the mass within which participates this resin, after dried up, is covered by another resin of products family WINWET, which is not emulsified.
Tolerance to positive pressure: High.
Tolerance to negative pressure: Very high, thanks to the high adhesion of the cement mortar or the repairing cement contained in the resin. For this reason   Betoplex is widely used both in construction of cement mortar for waterproofing of foundations, undergrounds, outer surfaces of tanks and other surfaces on which water exerts negative pressure, and in the manufacture of repair cement for the repair of broken parts or cracks on such surfaces, in combination with either common cement or fast setting cement, if there is continuous leakage.
Lifetime: Unlimited. The polymerized resin does not lose its properties over the time, firstly because the material does not practically age (is not dried nor decomposed) and has high elasticity (does not lose its shape nor is torn with expansions and contractions) and secondly because in the mass is completely protected against the sun, the weather conditions and mechanical damages.
5. Natural properties of the product
Product form before its application: Milky thin liquid.
Product form after its application and   polymerization: Single transparent, colorless, waterproof cohesive elastic mass diffused into concrete and other materials.
Elasticity: Very good.
Adhesiveness: Very good.
Air permeability and vapor permeability: Yes, it allows transpiration, because the polymerized resin has such a molecular structure that does not allow the passage of water but allows the passage of air and water vapor between its molecules. This ensures the following key benefits:
1. The building is well ventilated and living in it is healthy and pleasant, because there is no smell (“musty”) or oxygen deficiency causing headaches, sleepiness, decreased performance, etc.
2. The tendency to form vapor condensation (droplets) and mold on the ceilings and walls is not deteriorated.
3. Thanks to adequate ventilation is avoided the gradual carbonization and weakening of the concrete that can occur when there is an increased concentration of CO2 in the building because of poor ventilation.
Filling capacity of cavities and cracks: Excellent, without leaving any gaps. Especially cast cement mortar fills itself all cavities without any effort by the technician.
Solubility in water: The resin is dissolved in water, but this is unnecessary, it may be added to the blend as it is. Especially in repair concrete the water should be completely avoided.
Waterproofness: Very good. No additive material may provide itself perfect   waterproofness in the mass in which participates also water, as during drying of water is prevented cracking of the mass, however inevitably are created very small pores. To ensure absolute waterproofness of the mass, after drying, there should be a coating with a roller or a brush or spraying, to seal these   pores, with one of the Betostal resins, depending on the type of the application.
The reduction in water permeability of the mass is proportional to the amount of resin to be added to the mixture of cement and sand and inversely proportional to the amount of water.
Hydrophocity and oleophobicity: No. To be achieved hydrophobic and oleophobic surface of the mass further of waterproofness, it is required a coating with Contraqua 7/50. For better adhesion of Contraqua 7/50 it can optionally be preceded by a coating with a resin of high adhesion (Betostal F/18) or high adhesiveness (Sovaplex DS), which functions as a primer, although the additive Betoplex generates by itself very good conditions for the adhesion of Contraqua 7/50.
